July 26-29, 2004

One point of contention was the decision of the convention to contain all protest within a 2 block long "designated protest area" on the other side of the metro station from the Fleet Center, surrounded by chain link fence and a wall of officers, and safely away from both entering convention delegates and the news media. This decision was met with outcry from local political groups that were planning on demonstrating to gain greater exposure, and was unsuccessfully challenged in court by the ACLU.

Some protesters tailored their presentations to fit within this format, while others attempted to coordinate protests elsewhere around the city, using cell phones and laptops to scout and stay ahead of the Boston Police Department.
